David Cook went to Tulsa and joined the band Midwest Kings, who he had previously opened for after Axium broke up in 2006. In addition to playing bass, he contributed to the band’s EP “Incoherent With Desire to Move On.”

Following Cook’s success on American Idol, two members of Midwest Kings, Andy Skib and Neal Tiemann, joined his supporting band, The Anthemic. He was supporting himself by working as a bartender while honing his craft.

Cook gained notoriety after taking home the American Idol title. Following his victory, he released “The Time of My Life,” his debut single, which made a significant impact on the music business, peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and came in second on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.

The single platinum certification was given by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of more than 1.4 million copies. Cook’s self-titled major-label debut album was released on November 18, 2008, and like its predecessor, it was given a platinum certification by the RIAA. The album’s top twenty singles were “Light On” and “Come Back to Me.”
