David Richard Berkowitz (born Richard David Falco on June 1, 1943) is an American serial murderer convicted of a series of gunshot attacks that began in the summer of 1976. He is also known as the Son of Sam and the.44 Caliber Killer. By July 1967, he had killed six people and wounded seven more with a.44 calibre Bulldog revolver. Berkowitz dodged a large police manhunt while leaving audacious letters promising more killings as the death toll rose. He frightened New York City and gained worldwide renown, since he was widely reported in the press. Berkowitz was indicted for eight shooting incidents after his arrest by New York City police in August 1967. He confessed to all of them, claiming that a demon who had taken possession of his neighbor’s dog had ordered him to kill.
