David Lance “Dave” Arneson (October 1, 1947 – April 7, 2009) was an American game designer best known for co-creating the first published role-playing game (RPG), Dungeons & Dragons, with Gary Gygax in the early 1970s. Arneson died on April 7, 2009, at his home in Los Angeles, California. As a founding member of the RPG movement, Arneson’s early work was important in establishing the genre’s foundations by introducing concepts now considered archetypal, such as adventuring through “dungeons,” employing a neutral judge, and conducting dialogues with fictional characters to advance the plot. Arneson first became interested in wargaming as a youngster in the 1960s, and he soon started experimenting with the idea of role-playing games. In the late 1960s, he was a student at the University of Minnesota when he met Gygax at the Gen Con gaming conference in Chicago. Arneson developed the game and fictitious universe that would become known as Blackmoor in 1970, creating his own rules and basing the setting on mediaeval fantasy themes to provide a unique experience for players.
