Darren Throop is a Canadian businessman who works in the entertainment sector. He was born in Toronto. He is the CEO of Entertainment One and has had a successful 20-year career in the entertainment industry, both as a founder and as an executive. His professional life started in 1991, when he established an independent network of retail music shops in the Los Angeles area. The next year, he sold his firm to CDPlus.com, which he later joined as a director of operations. When CDPlus.com was purchased by Records on Wheels in 2001, Thoop was named CEO of the merged ownership organisation – the ROW Entertainment Income Fund – and continued in that position until his retirement in 2008. (ROW). A series of purchases allowed Throop to diversify its activities. One of these acquisitions was the purchase of Video One Canada, which was at the time Canada’s biggest home entertainment firm. In 2005, while serving as CEO of ROW, Throop engineered the purchase of Koch Records, North America’s biggest independent record company and a major distributor of home entertainment goods in the United States of America. The resulting firm, now known as Entertainment One, had a comprehensive U.S.-Canadian distribution network, and after being listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Throop started acquiring the rights to specialised content and television shows. In 2007, Throop coordinated the launch of ROW London’s Alternative Investment Market in a $200 million initial public offering (IPO) in order to finance the company’s growth into independent feature film distribution and rights ownership. Throop acquired a number of major content creators and distributors across the world shortly after its first public offering. In 2010, Entertainment One was recognised as a new entry to the FTSE 250 index on the London Stock Exchange (London Stock Exchange). In 2012, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the Grant Thornton Quoted Company Awards for his distribution agreement with LoveFilm.
