She attended Catholic school for eight years, where she developed an interest in painters such as John Bauer, Remedios Varo, and Hieronymus Bosch.

She grew up watching cartoons such as The Powerpuff Girls, South Park, and The Simpsons, which influenced her later wor.

Similarly, she was influenced by Hayao Miyazaki’s “mature anime” film Princess Mononoke, Studio Ghibli films, and Garfield.

Her first flip-book animation, “Pikachu thunder stunning a Charmander,” was released in 2000. Terrace was a dancer for ten years before studying animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She was “huge into cats” as a kid while obsessing over Pokémon, and the figures she created were cats or cat-girls “being followed by ghosts and dinosaur ghosts.”

At SVA, this trend persisted. She drew for around eight hours a day while she was there, just as she had done at Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School in New Haven, Connecticut, and began submitting work to her Tumblr account.

She developed an animated short titled “Kickball” in April 2012, during her third year at SVA, that was commended for its design and “expressive motion,” with voiceovers by Yotem Perel and music by Jeff Liu.

The National Board of Review awarded her film a grant.

The next year, she collaborated on a short animated film called “Mirage” alongside Iker Maidagan. Terrace animated and designed the characters, while Maidagan did the layout and authored the plot.

Terrace and Maidagan received an Alumni Scholarship Award for the video, which was acclaimed as “flawlessly executed” and shown at the LA Shorts Fest.

When asked about animating at the time, she claimed she enjoyed it and that she was on her way to becoming a “real filmmaker,” adding that she would work with Maidagan in the future.

She later regarded her time at SVA as a mixed bag, noting that she gained a lot of knowledge via online courses, her classmates, and fellow students. Terrace, Vivienne Medrano, and Terrace’s roommate Luz Batista worked as assistants on Zach Bellissimo’s thesis film “Blanderstein” in 2011.

“Blanderstein” won a Dusty Award for “Outstanding Traditional Animation and Achievement in Traditional Animation Character Design,” tying Michael Ruocco’s thesis picture, “Destiny is for the Birds.” In June 2012, she received special recognition in Rachel Errede’s SVA Thesis film “Nym.”

Dana Terrace Career

Terrace supervised many episodes of DuckTales in 2017 and made Webby Vanderquack “more lively.” Terrace later described this employment as a place where she didn’t feel “fulfilled artistically or emotionally,” prompting her to start her own show. Despite the fact that she had never seen the program prior to working on it, the line producer for the second season of Gravity Falls was also working on DuckTales and brought her on board.

Variety featured her as an up-and-coming animator the same year, stating that she is constantly learning new things and is always “searching for the next opportunity to push herself.” In the same year, she worked as a storyboard revisionist on Tom Caulfield and Stephen Sandoval’s film Tangled: Before Ever After, the latter of whom would subsequently work on The Owl House. She’d also storyboard “Challenge of the Brave,” the fourth episode of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

Terrace began pitching her own series after years of working on various Disney Channel episodes, coming up with the characters and “baseline idea” for the show at the end of 2016.

“A little girl [who] goes to another planet and learns magic from an elder witch,” she said in her pitch, which came only a few months after she started directing DuckTales in 2017.

The Owl Lady was her first creation, and she based it on the women in her family, including her aunts, mother, and grandmother. Her roommate, Luz Noceda, is the inspiration for the character Luz Noceda.

Terrace’s father, Thomas Terrace, an attorney in Hamden, Connecticut, gave her the game Pokemon Red before he died when she was 11 years old, and it influenced the series.

Terrace stated she was inspired to develop The Owl House in order to establish it was a decent story, and she named it after the “mystique surrounding owls.” While there is some material for fans who wish to “dig further” into the show, such as codes and ciphers in Gravity Falls, she subsequently stated that there is a way to “enjoy the program as it is” without delving into the backstory.

The Owl House was greenlit alongside Amphibia on February 23, 2018, and will premiere on Disney Channel in the United States on January 10, 2020. On November 21, 2019, the series was renewed for a second season. Terrace also created an alternate cover for issue 4 of Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake: Card Wars, a six-issue BOOM! Studios miniseries featuring Fionna and Cake, gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake.

Terrace also did guest animation for Adventure Time’s “Bad Timing” episode. Terrace slammed Adult Swim’s termination of The Venture Bros. a few years later, stating, “This timeline sucks.”

Mike Rianda, the director of The Mitchells vs. the Machines, revealed in 2021 that Terrace worked as a storyboard artist on the film. Terrace also produced rough animation for the episodes “Keeping Up a-fear ances,” “Hunting Palismen,” and “Eclipse Lake” from The Owl House season 2.

Terrace and LGBTQ+ representation in The Owl House

Terrace was responsible for the depiction of an LGBTQ+ romance between the characters of Luz Noceda and Amity Blight in The Owl House. She frequently uses Twitter to confirm characters’ LGBTQ+ identities. Despite Disney’s initial opposition to the show’s depiction of a queer romance, Terrace finally won their approval, citing her “stubbornness” as the reason for their change of heart.

Conservative blogs like One Million Moms have condemned Disney Channel for including LGBTQ+ identities in the series, while news sites like CNN and Deadline have shown support for these portrayals.

Terrace told Vanity Fair in March 2021 that during the development of the show, she was “very open about Luz being bi and including LGBT+ characters in a very casual, normalized way,” and that she was told she couldn’t “have any kind of gay storyline among the main characters,” so she “let herself get angry” and “stormed out of the room.” She was “given the all-clear” a week or two later, with the executives she works with providing her with “nothing but support.”
