Turner’s career in journalism started in Chicago while he was in school, as the intern that asked too many questions, spent his weekends in TV newsrooms and listened to every word of advice he could solicit. Now, it’s taken him to Baltimore, where he has covered the rioting, looting, and violence that spread through the city after the death of Freddie Gray.
He was there when police, draped in riot gear, met face-to-face with an angry community in west Baltimore when law enforcement resources were deployed throughout the city and he was there when a nearly-completed senior center burned on Baltimore’s east side. A series of stories he has done on “Stolen Valor” is leading to law changes in Maryland.
In Columbia, SC, he reported at WLTX, a CBS affiliate. There, he covered the story of George Stinney, Jr., the youngest person to be executed in America in modern history in 1944. Turner was there as his sister told a judge her brother was innocent of murder, 70 years after his death.
And Turner was there when a judge agreed, throwing out his conviction. To date, he is the only TV reporter to interview his family. He also made a name for himself for fiercely covering local politics, as well as government, crime, and courts.

Hundreds of Chicagoans heading to Washington, D.C. to rally for gun safety laws
CHICAGO – Hundreds of Chicagoans are heading to Washington, D.C. to rally for gun safety laws. Once they arrive, they plan on meeting with high-profile members of both the House and Senate. The outcry against gun violence was so great that by the time the buses left, they had more people who showed up than they had spots for.
The toll of gun violence is personal for one family. At just 3 years old, Emari experiences it every day. Her mother, Destiny Nicholas, was killed in a Southwest Side shooting just five months ago at the age of 23.
Emari was hanging onto her grandmother, Destiny’s mom, with her picture on a button, as the two prepared to join hundreds of others on a trek, halfway across the country.
“Once I experienced for myself, my heart just bleeds for the mothers who see a baby one day and the next hour doesn’t,” said Fredricka Nicholas.
Believing the fight for that future is now, 600 people boarded six different buses, driving overnight. That’s where a Congressional House subcommittee will gather, in the morning, for a hearing on the community response to gun violence.
“We always talk about the second amendment and the right to bear arms — what about the right to live?” said Father Michael Pfleger, Faith Community of Saint Sabina.
