Cris Carter started playing football and basketball at Middletown High School. In college, he accepted the offer from the Ohio State University and intended to play both football and basketball. He decided to join its football team in 1987.
While with the Ohio State Buckeyes, he became a consensus All-American selection after his junior season with the team. He set a Rose Bowl record with 9 receptions over 172 yards. Carter was chosen as afourth round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles during the 1987 supplemental draft.
He was released by the Eagles’ coach Buddy Ryan due to abusive use of drugs and alcohol. Carter was claimed by the Minnesota Vikings off its waivers on September 4, 1990. He appeared for eight times at Pro Bowl. Also, he received several accolades which include Bart Starr Man of the Year in 1994, and the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 1999.
For almost ten seasons with the Vikings, Carter was an all-time leader with 1,004 receptions, 110 touchdowns and 12,383 receiving yards. He moved to Miami Dolphins in 2002 while working with HBO’s Inside the NFL as team analyst and retired from playing from NFL. In 2013, he was hailed as one of the inductees into the Hall of Fame Class.
