Joye grew up in a relatively large family. Information about his parents is rather scarce and not available, nevertheless, he has three siblings. Two brothers called Kevin and Keith and a sister called Carol Joye. Kevin and Keith worked alongside Col and were members of the KJ Quintet and Joy boys band while his sister Carol manages Sandy Scott.

Col Joye Wife | Children

Col Joye married Dalys Dawson in 1970 in a joint wedding ceremony with his sister Carol Jacobsen and Sandy Scott in Fiji. The wedding was quite a private ceremony and only had six people present. The couple has two fully grown children Amber Jacobsen and Clayton Jacobsen.

Col Joye Family Feud

Veteran concert promoter Kevin Jacobsen declared himself bankrupt, from the twist in the bitter family feud with his pop star brother Col Joye and their children. The 77-year-old impresario – who claims he was cheated out of the rights to the $40 million musical Dirty Dancing – tipped himself into bankruptcy on June 24, with debts of more than $2 million.

Kevin made the move as Mr. Joye’s company was trying to bankrupt him and his wife Billie over $5,643 in court costs from an earlier family dispute over box office proceeds from the show.

The brothers had once shared rights to the musical, but Mr. Jacobsen claims that none of the profits are flowing to him because he has been unfairly cut out of the family company. However, Mr. Joye denies the claim.

Mr. Jacobsen alleges he was removed as a company shareholder after a falling out between the two brothers in May 2007. The dispute arose after Kevin’s son Michael and Col’s daughter Amber joined the business. The children were elevated to board positions which threatened to destroy all that the family has built up since the brothers were in the hit pop group the Joy Boys.

The brothers and their now-adult children have spent years warring over the lucrative musical, which produced $40 million a year in royalties at its peak. The two families also owned the Vector Arena in Auckland together, once worth $14 million.

They have battled it out in the British High Court and in the US, as well as at courts in Australia. Mr. Jacobsen obtained the worldwide rights to the Dirty Dancing show because of his close relationship with the American writer of the film, Eleanor Bergstein.

His wife Billie Jacobsen, 66, is also teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. She is attempting to reach a compromise with her creditors under the Bankruptcy Act. She owns the family home in Hunters Hill, worth about $2 million.

Col Joye Love Child | Malcolm Hansman

In 2013, a 42-year Australian pilot, Malcolm Hansman claimed that he was a love child of Col Joye. Malcolm claims that his mother Ingrid was a long term girlfriend of Col Joye.

Stuart Hansman who is the foster father of Malcolm claims that Joye and Ingrid met in the 1960s when Ingrid was modeling and Col Joye became his first boyfriend. Stuart says he was aware of this when he wed Ingrid in 1965 but thought that the romance had ended.

However, when Ingrid gave birth to Malcolm in Aug 1971, concerns were raised. For a start, he was a much larger baby than expected given the stature of his parents. Nevertheless, Stuart raised Malcolm as his son, and made sure he had a happy childhood, complete with private school education. But after the couple divorced in 2007, Stuart had a DNA test with Malcolm which excluded him from being his biological father.

Malcolm is based in the US, where he flies for an American commercial airline, had put off having the DNA test for a year because he was “fearful of the results”.

“When I finally did one I asked my dad to not tell me the outcome but that eventually came out: My dad who brought me up as his own son was not my biological father. After everything he did for me, I wasn’t his. That destroyed him and devastated me.

“I approached my mother to find out who my biological father was and in August last year, she told me that it was Col Joye,” he claimed. Since then the Australian artist has allegedly turned down requests to have a DNA test and has not contacted Malcolm.

“I’m disappointed that he hasn’t tried to contact me in any way,” he said. “I don’t know anything about his medical history. It would also be nice to get to know him.”

With time, more people joined the Jacobsens, and eventually, they formed the KJ Quintet band.

KJ Quintet band secured regular gigs at a hotel in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney which prompted Entrepreneur Bill McColl to offer KJ Quintet a spot on his ‘Jazzorama’ concert in Oct 1957. The band changed their name to Col Joye and the Joy Boys.

They signed a contract with Festival Records and produced their first hit single ‘Bye Bye Baby’ which hit the charts in March 1959. Bye, Bye Baby was released from the album  Bye Bye Baby / I Miss You So. Subsequently, Col Joye and the Joy Boys released their third song titled, ‘Oh Yeah Uh Huh’, in Oct 1959. ‘Oh Yeah Uh Huh’ was the first rock song originally produced and recorded in Australia to become a national number one pop hit.

Col Joye had released 20 singles, 24 EPs, and 19 LPs by 1963. By this time, he had a huge fan base that he had to employ staff to reply to his fans’ emails. The rise of the Beatles from 1963 meant that Joye waited until 1973 before another number one hit, his ballad ‘Heaven is my woman’s love’.

With the spontaneous increase in the number of artists in Australia, Joye and Kevin came together and established ATA recording label in 1966. ATA provided services in artist management and publishing. Furthermore, as managers, they helped form the careers of Little Pattie and Judy Stone, discovered the Bee Gees, and encouraged Barry Gibb’s songwriting.
