Cj Jones Family | Cj Jones Parents

CJ Jones was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. He is one of seven hearing children born to two deaf African American parents, Clarence, and Ruth who attended a school for deaf children in Missouri. Jones’ deaf condition came as a result of him falling ill with spinal meningitis (he was 7 years old as of then).

Clarence graduated from high school with honors, and wanted to go to college but was discouraged from doing so because the local deaf college refused black students. However, success was his aim and goal, so he took up boxing and won a Golden Glove, an amateur boxing award, in the 1930s. He later went to work for a tire company, where he became a supervisor.

CJ speaks up of his father and says, “He never gave up. He worked hard any way he could to support the family. We all grew up to be successful and went on to have good lives.”

Nevertheless, Cj was taught sign language by his parents at an early age, so becoming deaf was not quite as traumatic as it might have been. Jones discovered he had a knack for comedy, as well as his father’s determination and agility, all qualities which have led to his success as an entertainer, he said.

He said his father taught him and his siblings they would have to fight for what they wanted and also taught them to believe in themselves.

“He showed a lot of love and support, encouraging us to have the best education,” Jones said. “Dad was a role model, gave that to me, and I decided that’s a good way to pass along that heritage to my kids.”

Through Deaf, Eyes is the story of a hidden and complex culture in America, a story of conflicts and prejudice that reaches the heart of what it means to be human. The deaf minority has seldom if ever had a voice. This documentary provides that voice, and that story, for the first time ever.

The film earned $226 million globally, bolstered by positive word-of-mouth support and fatiguing interest in blockbuster franchises. Baby Driver received a number of awards; three Academy Awards (for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing), two BAFTAs, two Critics’ Choice Awards, and a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Elgort), and won several other honors chiefly for technical achievement.
