In 1938 she started her singing career by joining her brothers and sister in a gospel singing group known as the Drinkard Four; they performed at New Hope Baptist Church and recorded a live album called A Joyful Noise recorded for RCA. Later in 1963 she formed the group the Sweet Inspirations along with Doris Troy and her niece Dee Dee Warwick. She has also had a very successful solo career. Her cross genre singing style has been featured with many well-known artists such as Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Burt Bacharach and Herbie Mann. She has also been the leader and driving force behind the New Hope Baptist Church Youth Inspirational Choir, which contains over 200 members, for more than 50 years, and she’s also been a fixture at the annual gospel music festival McDonald’s Gospelfest. In 2012 she recorded her tenth solo record, Walk on By Faith, for Harlem Records.
