Chambliss was born in Dayton, Ohio, on December 26, 1948. He was the third of four sons born to Carroll and Christene Chambliss. His father was a chaplain in the United States Navy, leading the family to relocate many times during Chris’ childhood.
They settled in Oceanside, California, where Chris attended high school. Chris and his brothers all played baseball on the Oceanside High School baseball team

Now 72, Chambliss is content being a retired homebody living three miles north of downtown Atlanta. He does a little golfing in a few local tournaments, but mostly stays home. “I have two Shiloh Shepherds that are big dogs and they keep me busy,” Chambliss said.
