Kathy Fang’s father Peter Fang is the owner and chef of House of Nanking. The restaurant is located in San Francisco.
Peter and his wife Lily opened the restaurant House of Nanking located on Kearny Street in San Francisco in 1988. He helped in selecting the location as well as made sure that the name of the restaurant would be something meaningful to him and his wife.
Even though the name of the restaurant is based in Nanking, at first the dishes that were served are not from there and it was made as authentic Shanghainese home cooking.
Later, after some time after their opening, he started to put his own spin on traditional Chinese cuisine which was a hit as it was something new. He started to cook various dishes and experimented with fusing traditional dishes with local ingredients.
After he started to provide these fusion dishes he started to realize that there was a long line of people who were waiting only to try his food. As he wanted his customers to be given delicious food instantly as soon as they arrive he started to order for the customers himself rather than waiting for the customers to order.
It became the trademark of the restaurant that the chef ordered for them as it provided a faster service and the people loved it. The restaurant was not only known as the best Chinese restaurant in the area but also a restaurant where the owner does not let you order the food.
The owner of House of Nanking was becoming more and more famous every day and after some time the restaurant was listed in the Best of list as well as appeared in TV and articles such as San Francisco Chronicle, Lonely Planet, New York Times, Travel Channel, and many more.
In the year 1997, he and his wife expanded the restaurant including the kitchen, and also added more seats to meet the high demand. He had hired more employees as well as a sous chef to help him make more dishes. The restaurant has been open for more than 30 years and they still run the business in the same way that they did before. He also has a sister restaurant named Fang Restaurant which is located at 660 Howard Street in San Francisco with his daughter where he works as an Executive chef.

She stated that he was her biggest hero and her forever role model. She thanked him for devoting his life to raising, supporting, and teaching her to become the person she is today and she added that it was incredible that he was doing the same with his grandkids.

In 1980, the Fang family moved to a city in California, San Francisco located in the United States of America with was a hard decision for them as they had to leave their hometown and move to an entirely different country with different cultures and traditions.
When the couple with their daughter moved to the United States they did not have much money and also only knew minimal English. They probably had a difficult time with much less money and as they did not know much English it would have been difficult for them to get a proper job.
The power couple started to work in different restaurants in the restaurant industry in various positions such as servers to make ends meet and to give themselves the basic as well as provide their daughter with proper education.
Before Peter moved to the United States he always had a passion for cooking and would spend lots of hours watching different chefs cook his favorite food in stalls back in China. He was extremely intrigued by their methods to prepare comfort food in such a manner. He had some fond and happy memories of cooking back in his home in Shanghai and he has always wanted to recreate that feeling that he felt back then and wanted to open a restaurant.
After years of hard work, he was able to open his own restaurant with his wife in 1980 which gained massive popularity with his skills and innovative idea of fusing his home foods with the ingredients available in the country. He has also opened a second restaurant after the massive success of the first restaurant with his daughter.

The chef was interested in cooking and classic Chinese food from a young age. She used to spend all her time at the restaurant owned by her grandmother which was very close to where she lived.
