Charles Shaughnessy Career

From 1984 through 1992, Shaughnessy was most recognized for his role as Shane Donovan on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. His character’s romance with Patsy Pease’s character, Kimberly Brady, transformed the two into a soap supercouple and rekindled interest in Days among adolescent viewers in the 1980s.

In 1986, he appeared on Super Password alongside Betty White and Bert Convy, and in January 1993, he played the title character’s date to the inaugural ball in an episode of Murphy Brown. Shaughnessy is also well-known for his role as Maxwell Sheffield on CBS’s The Nanny, in which he played alongside Fran Drescher from 1993 until 1999.

He and Drescher re-teamed for Drescher’s second sitcom, Living with Fran, in which Shaughnessy played her philandering yet needy ex-husband, Ted.

After two seasons, Living with Fran was canceled on May 17, 2006. In the 1996 TV drama A Kiss So Deadly, Shaughnessy reconnected with another Day of Our Lives co-star, Charlotte Ross, who played Shane’s daughter, Eve Donovan.

Ross played Shaughnessy’s daughter (Dedee Pfeiffer’s) roommate; Shaughnessy’s character, while being married, develops an obsessive, Lolita-like relationship with Ross. When she tries to break it off, Shaughnessy’s character murders Ross’s character, and his daughter gradually learns the truth.

Shaughnessy starred (in a dual role) in the Disney Channel made-for-TV film Get a Clue, which aired in 2002. He also appeared in the 2000 made-for-TV Halloween film Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire, which starred Caroline Rhea; she had appeared on The Nanny in 1998 as part of a cross-over with Hollywood Squares.

That same year, Shaughnessy appeared twice on The WB’s Sabrina (along with Rhea, Melissa Joan Hart, and Beth Broderick) as two separate characters. In Stargate SG-1’s eighth season episode “Covenant,” he played Alec Colson.

He also provided the voice of Dr. Quintaine in the PC game Freelancer. Shaughnessy can be seen in an episode of NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and as Dennis the Goldfish in the Disney Channel animated series Stanley.

Shaughnessy won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for his portrayal of Dennis on May 11, 2002. She played the murder victim (Samuel, Guru) in Murder 101: The Locked Room Mystery on August 8, 2008.

His voice might be heard in television advertising for Range Rover cars starting of September 2008. In December 2008, he played Pietro in The Tale of Despereaux. He also portrayed the Cockney English accent for “The Boss” in the game Saints Row 2.

On 5 May 2009, Shaughnessy made a guest appearance in the series The Mentalist episode “Miss Red” as the manager of a private club. In the episode “Judge Me Tender,” he played a talent contest judge fashioned like Simon Cowell on the hit TV show Hannah Montana.

Shaughnessy returned to Days of Our Lives in May 2010, in a storyline involving Alice Horton’s (played by Frances Reid) funeral, momentarily reuniting him with his old co-star Patsy Pease (Kimberly).

The real-life death of the actress who had long portrayed Mrs. Horton necessitated this story development, as the creators were aware that the public would not accept the character being played by anybody else.

Shaughnessy played King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot! at The Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine, from August to September 2010. He got the Broadway World Boston Theater Award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical in January 2011. (Large Theater).

Shaughnessy has played Elliot Sanders on the soap opera web series The Bay since 2010. On December 6, 2010, he appeared as a guest on Fran Drescher’s limited-run daytime show, The Fran Drescher Show.

He made his North Shore Music Theatre debut in June 2011 as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, and he returned in fall 2013 to play Georges in La Cage aux Folles.

He appeared as a guest on the first-season finale of Fran Drescher’s TV Land sitcom Happily Divorced, which aired on August 17, 2011.

In May 2012, Shaughnessy returned to Days of Our Lives as Shane Donovan in a plot involving his return to the ISA and interactions with Hope and Bo Brady, as well as Stefano DiMera.

Patsy Pease, who played Shane’s wife, Kimberly, did not appear in this narrative arc, nor did Charlotte Ross, who played Shane’s daughter, Eve. In November 2013, he returned for a three-episode plotline in which Shane and Kimberly struggle with their daughter’s drug usage.

On 23 January 2014, it was announced that Shaughnessy would assume the lead role in the play Harvey at the New Theatre in Overland Park, Kansas after original star Judge Reinhold was offered the opportunity to leave the production.

In August 2014, Shaughnessy made a guest appearance on the Disney Channel show Dog with a Blog as business tycoon Tom Fairbanks, a man who wanted to buy Stan, the title character, and use him as the spokes-dog for his animal rescue campaign.
