What are some examples of ecosystems with high biodiversity?
Example of ecosystem with high biodiversity is tropical rain forest as seen in Amazon basin of south America. Such forests are also thriving in parts of central Africa and also in islands of Indonesia. In marine environment, coral reefs are example of high biodiversity aquatic ecosystems.
What are the characteristics of biodiversity?
BIODIVERSITY HAS VALUE: • Biodiversity has evolutionary, ecological, economic, social, cultural, and intrinsic values. Biodiversity is nature’s insurance policy • Biologically diverse ecosystems offer a variety of natural products, including medical ingredients that enhance human health and standard of living.
What are two characteristics you might observe in an ecosystem with high biodiversity?
In order to have high biodiversity, an ecosystem must have a high number of different species, and it must also have a high number of individuals of each species. That means an ecosystem that has a lot of different species but only one or two of each species is not considered to have high biodiversity.
Does high biodiversity affect ecosystem?
Under certain environmental conditions, increased biodiversity can also lead to an ecosystem becoming more unstable. Ecosystems have a variety of benefits: They provide us with food, water and other resources, as well as recreational space.
What is the role of biodiversity in ecosystem?
Ecological life support— biodiversity provides functioning ecosystems that supply oxygen, clean air and water, pollination of plants, pest control, wastewater treatment and many ecosystem services. Recreation—many recreational pursuits rely on our unique biodiversity , such as birdwatching, hiking, camping and fishing.
What is the importance of biodiversity to ecosystem?
Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. For example, A larger number of plant species means a greater variety of crops. Greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms.
What are 5 benefits of biodiversity?
Support a larger number of plant species and, therefore, a greater variety of crops. Protect freshwater resources. Promote soils formation and protection. Provide for nutrient storage and recycling.
What are the objectives of biodiversity?
It promotes at least one of the three objectives of the Convention: the conservation of bio-diversity, sustainable use of its components (ecosystems, species or genetic resources), or fair and equitable sharing of the benefits of the utilisation of genetic resources.
What is the importance of biodiversity to students?
Biodiversity provides vital ecosystem functions such as soil fertilization, nutrient recycling, pest and disease regulation, erosion control and crop and tree pollination.
What is the importance of biodiversity to human health?
Biodiversity supports human and societal needs, including food and nutrition security, energy, development of medicines and pharmaceuticals and freshwater, which together underpin good health. It also supports economic opportunities, and leisure activities that contribute to overall wellbeing.
What are three types of biodiversity?
Usually three levels of biodiversity are discussed—genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity.
What are examples of biodiversity?
Most people recognize biodiversity by species—a group of individual living organisms that can interbreed. Examples of species include blue whales, white-tailed deer, white pine trees, sunflowers, and microscopic bacteria that can’t even be seen by the naked eye.
What is a good definition of biodiversity?
The term biodiversity (from “biological diversity”) refers to the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems, and can encompass the evolutionary, ecological, and cultural processes that sustain life.
What is biodiversity in your own words?
Biodiversity is the shortened form of two words “biological” and “diversity”. It refers to all the variety of life that can be found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms) as well as to the communities that they form and the habitats in which they live.
What you mean by biodiversity?
“Biological diversity” means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
What are the 4 types of biodiversity?
Four Types of Biodiversity
- Species Diversity. Every ecosystem contains a unique collection of species, all interacting with each other.
- Genetic Diversity. Genetic diversity describes how closely related the members of one species are in a given ecosystem.
- Ecosystem Diversity.
- Functional Diversity.
What is biodiversity and its type?
Biodiversity includes three main types: diversity within species (genetic diversity), between species (species diversity) and between ecosystems (ecosystem diversity).
Which type of biodiversity is significant?
It is important in natural as well as artificial ecosystems. It deals with nature’s variety, the biosphere. It refers to variabilities among plants, animals and microorganism species. Biodiversity includes the number of different organisms and their relative frequencies in an ecosystem.
