Chandra Bahadur Dangi was born in Salyan, Salyan District, Nepal on November 30, 1939, the seventh child in a family of eight. He was raised with his siblings, which consisted of more boys than girls.

When he was born, Dangi was almost medium height at birth so there were no concerns. However, a few years later, it became apparent to his mother that while all of his peers were growing up, her baby boy was not. To fix the problem, he was given a bone-strengthening drug, but it didn’t change anything as he didn’t grow any further.

Although her family had a height problem, Dangi seemed to be on the extreme: only four of her siblings, including her sisters, are of average height while three of her brothers were only four feet tall.

There are no cases of any medical issue caused by his stunted growth which was described as a primordial dwarf; a type of dwarfism in which one has a smaller than normal body size at all stages of development from birth.

Before he became famous for his lack of height, Chandra Bahadur Dangi was an artisan who made placemats and headbands to help them carry heavy loads on their backs. Apart from that, he also helped people take care of their cows and buffaloes. He also earned money by weaving mats.

Dangi spent his life with his older brother and his family, who cared for him until his death.

After that, Dangi became popular all over the world and he had the chance to travel to different parts of the world including London where he met the greatest living man at the time, Sultan Kösen.

Before being found, the shortest individual was Gul Mohammed, an Indian who was 57 cm (1 ft 10 in) tall. After Dangi’s death, the baton was passed to Junrey Balawing, originally from the Philippines. Balawing, born in 1993, is 59.9 cm (23.6 inches) tall, making him the third shortest man in history.
