Caroline Hawley (born 1967 in Nigeria) is a British journalist who has worked as a Special Correspondent for the BBC News channel since 2007. She has also worked as a freelance journalist. Hawley is the daughter of British ambassador Sir Donald Hawley, who was born in the United Kingdom. She had her early education at Wycombe Abbey School, an exclusive girls’ school in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, before going on to Oxford University, where she majored in Arabic and Persian studies. During the years 1991 to 1994, Hawley worked as the Jerusalem reporter for Newsweek, where she started her journalistic career.
She began working for the BBC in 1994 as a newsroom journalist for the World Service, before being transferred to Cairo in 1999 and Jordan in 2001. She was banished from Iraq in 2002 while working as the BBC’s Baghdad reporter, but she returned to the nation when Saddam Hussein was deposed as president the following year. The BBC Middle East reporter was appointed to her position at the beginning of 2006.
In recent years, she has contributed to the BBC’s Newsnight programme, where she has covered topics such as an investigation into the selling of bogus bomb detectors such as the ADE651 and GT200 to nations such as Iraq and others. As a result of the inquiry, the United Kingdom was barred from exporting phoney bomb detectors to Iraq and Afghanistan. On April 23, 2013, Jim McCormick, the creator of the firm that manufactured the ADE651, was found guilty of three charges of fraud at the Old Bailey in London, and he was sentenced to 10 years in jail after his conviction. Gary Bolton, the proprietor of the business that manufactured the GT200, was also convicted of two counts of fraud on July 26, 2013, and was sentenced to seven years in prison after his conviction.
