He appeared alongside Scott Baio, Michael Tucci, Charlie Schlatter, and family members Shane Van Dyke, Dick Van Dyke, Taryn Van Dyke , and Wes Van Dyke. He also wrote the screenplay for one of the episodes, The Blair Nurse Project (2001). The series struggled at first and was almost canceled at the end of the second season, but it returned as a midseason replacement in the third season and was regularly renewed thereafter.

In 2012, he and his brother Shane Van Dyke wrote the screenplay for mystery/thriller Chernobyl Diaries, which is based on an original story by Oren Peli. The film was directed by Bradley Parker and had Dimitri Diatchenko, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, and Olivia Taylor Dudley in the leading cast. In the same year, he also wrote the screenplay for horror/thriller

The Sacred (directed by Brett Donowho, and starring Heather Roop and Jordan Belfi).

Personal life

Carey was married to his wife Anne Coolbaugh from February 2000 until their divorce (date not known). The couple had five children: daughters Ava (born August 2001), Gracie (born December 8, 2003), and Jane (born May 8, 2007); and Alex and Mia from Anne’s previous marriage. Alex and Mia were adopted by Carey.

His then 17-year-old son Alex Van Dyke was arrested in November 2011 after one of his classmates died in the Van Dykes’ house. The 18-year-old student and football player Griffen Kramer, son of former football quarterback Erik Kramer, died of a heroin overdose, and Carey was subsequently charged with violating the regulatory obligation.
