Mr. Bruce W. Smith (born 1961 in Los Angeles, California) is an American character animator and film director who is best known as the creator of Disney Channel’s The Proud Family. He is also known for his work on Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, and Piglet, Kanga, and Roo in Winnie the Pooh, among other projects. At the California Institute of the Arts, he pursued a degree in animation via the Character Animation department. Smith was hired as an assistant animator on Bill Melendez’s 1984 Garfield television special Garfield in the Rough, which established him as one of the few Black animators still working in the business. He went on to work as an animator at Baer Animation on the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and in 1992, he directed his first feature film, Bébé’s Kids, which was released in theatres. The Pagemaster was another notable project for Smith during the mid-1990s, as was serving as director and character designer for Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child, designing the characters for A Goofy Movie and C Bear and Jamal, as well as collaborating on the animated segments of Space Jam. He was also a founding member of the Da Boom Crew, which he founded alongside John P. White and Stiles White. Smith joined Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1998 and worked as a supervising animator on four of the company’s films: Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove, Home on the Range, and The Princess and the Frog. Smith received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 1998. In 2000, while still employed by Hyperion Pictures, he piloted his television series The Proud Family for Nickelodeon, which ultimately turned it down. The series was ultimately taken up by Disney Channel the following year, and it aired there until 2005. A first for his production business Jambalaya Studios, the series was the first to be produced by him. Smith grew raised in the Central Los Angeles neighbourhood.
