“Had a blast and loved every second of it,” Wheelan wrote. “I’m totally honored to be able to make this next joke… FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT!”
A source close to Saturday Night Live confirms to THR that the show declined to renew Wheelan’s contract. Other castmembers’ futures have not yet been determined. Additional decisions are expected to come in August.
Wheelan was a last-minute addition to the Season 39 cast of the venerable NBC sketch comedy show, the sixth featured player added to the series during one of the most ambitious casting overhauls in its history.
How ‘Saturday Night Live’ Found 5 New Castmembers
The Los Angeles-based comedian had little experience doing character work or sketch comedy when executive producer Lorne Michaels chose him for the cast — a fact even Wheelan openly joked about during his final audition, according to sources in attendance.
With Wheelan’s future at SNL decided, all eyes now turn to the other Season 39 freshmen: Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Mike O’Brien (who spent several seasons in the writers room) and Sasheer Zamata (who was added midseason after a public outcry over the lack of racial diversity).
‘SNL’ Announces Hire of 6 New Castmembers
The 2013-14 season was one of the seismic changes for SNL. Beyond the cast additions, longtime head writer and “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyers left midseason to host Late Night; he was replaced behind the “Update” desk by Colin Jost, who also took his head-writer post.
Nasim Pedrad, who joined in 2009, also is expected to leave this season to star in the upcoming Fox sitcom Mulaney.

Saturday Night Live
Wheelan was a recurring guest on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” using his stand-up stories as public service announcements against irresponsible behavior. On the Bruce Willis / Katy Perry episode, the commentary centered on having tattoos that have no meaning, with Wheelan showing off three tattoos he had in his youth: A tribal stamp on his left arm meant to look like the one Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers has, a nautical star on his right arm, and a weird oceanscape on his side (which came from a doodle he drew in his freshman year of high school, and which does not make sense to him because he grew up in Iowa, which is not a coastal state).
On the Anna Kendrick / Pharrell Williams episode, the commentary centered on the dangers of drinking alcohol, and the story of how his friends put butter down his pants while he was blacked out drunk and Wheelan worrying that he was dying of an undiscovered sexually transmitted disease.
On July 14.2014, Wheelan proclaimed through Twitter that he was now not a solid member of Sat Night Live, stating, “FIRED FROM the big apple IT’S Sat NIGHT!”. A couple of days later, Wheelan admitted that he was not angry and that he is still close to some of the cast members. He claimed that he prefers stand-up.
