John Hartmann was a Prussian brass composer who was born in Auleben on October 24, 1830 and died in Liverpool, England in 1897. He is most known for serving as bandmaster in the British 4th Regiment, 12th Lancers, under Prince George, Duke of Cambridge. Hartmann decided to be a musician in order to complete his obligatory service commitment to the Prussian military. As a result, he was able to choose the unit with which he would serve. In Cologne, he decided to serve with the Cuirassiers. He played solo coronet and violin with the Cuirassiers. Herr Schallehn, his bandmaster, departed the army in 1854 to join the Crystal Palace Company in England.
When Hartmann’s service ended in October 1855, he joined him. Ernest, John’s brother, also joined Schallehn (prior to John). Hartmann stayed with the Crystal Palace Band until he was given the post of bandmaster of the Tyrone Militia in Sheffield. He was a member of them, as well as the 1st (King’s) Dragoon Guards and the Royal Sherwood Foresters (Nottingham Militia), “one of the finest brass bands in the nation.” At Chichester, he formed the band of the 2nd Battalion of the (King’s Own) 4th Foot. For four years, he served with the 4th Foot Guards in Corfu and the 12th Lancers in Hounslow (turning it from a mediocre band to a professional band). Hartmann was asked to serve alongside the Duke of Cambridge at Aldershot, Leeds, and Manchester while serving with the 12th Lancers. He did this until he was forced to stop his profession due to a need to join in the military. Following that, he went to Germany and, not enjoying it, moved to England to compose and arrange music for British publishing houses.
