Brittany Boyer Hazle Township

Article by Brittany Boyer;

Heavy rain on Monday led to flooding in parts of Luzerne County, closing a shopping mall near Hazleton. Some stores are back open for business, less than a day after heavy rain flooded the Church Hill Mall. Monday evening, many of the stores were left cleaning up, but now they’re all getting back to normal.

There is debris in the parking lot from all of the heavy rain. Mall management says in its 48 years they have never seen flooding like this before.

Timothy Genetti, president of Elestan Realty which owns the property, says flooding has never happened in all of the mall’s years.

“There was no damage on product-wise but some of the stores had their carpets wet and others had very little,” Genetti said. At Hazleton Custom Cleaners, owner Tim Lutzko had fans running with hopes of drying out the carpet.

“It was kind of pandemonium because the employees and mall employees were all trying to get the water out as quickly as possible, so as they were pushing it out, it was coming right back in. So it was pretty hectic. The stream in the back was flooded as well,” Lutzko said.

If you can’t beat em’, join em’ and that’s exactly what Orloski’s Car Wash and Lube Shop in Wilkes-Barre Township is doing. The sign outside of the business says it all. If you’re looking for Pokemon, stop on by.

“Apparently, some of my customers were catching Pokemon in my car wash tunnel and on the property. So rather than try to exclude the Pokemon, we figured we’d invite them in,” Jerry Orloski said.

So far the sign has worked, even his employees are hunting Pokemon. Orloski says he still can’t understand how all the Pokemon got here. “So far they’ve been harmless. I don’t know how long they’ve been here. I just know that they’re here,” Orloski said.

This new “Pokemon Go” game is also bringing a lot of foot traffic to the Wyoming Valley Mall. Businesses inside are enjoying the extra customers.
