Roberto Martin Antonio “Bobby” Bonilla is an American retired player who has an estimated net worth of $27 million. He played in the Major League Baseball from 1986 to 2001. His 1992 contract with the New York Mets made him the highest paid baseball player in the league. After the Mets dropped him, they agreed to pay out the remainder of his contract. When he retired from the game in 2001, his contract with The Mets entitles him to earn nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting in 2011 and ending in 2035.
Bonilla was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates and he became the team’s starting third baseman in 1987. However, after committing 67 errors over his next two seasons, manager Jim Leyland decided to move him to right field. With his new position, he formed a formidable combination alongside stars Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke. Together, they helped propel the Pirates to two of their three straight NL East titles from 1990 to 1992.
Bonilla was traded to New York Mets in 1992. He signed a very lucrative 5 year contact worth $29 million that made him the highest paid player in baseball. His time at the Mets was very successful from a personal standpoint but not so much as a team. In 1995, he moved to Baltimore Orioles, where he helped put the team on the American League Championship Series the following year. He then moved to Florida Marlins, where he helped the team to win the 1997 World Series. He also spent one season with Los Angeles Dodgers.
