Robert Montgomery Knight was an American men’s college basketball coach. Nicknamed “the General”, Knight won 902 NCAA Division I men’s basketball games, a record at the time of his retirement, and currently fifth all-time. Knight was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 1971 to 2000.

Knight died in Bloomington, according to a post on bobknight.com, a website that represents Knight and his foundation. The school later confirmed Knight’s death, announcing his passing ahead of the IU women’s exhibition game Wednesday at Assembly Hall. He was 83.
Knight would make his greatest impact running his own sideline. After graduating from Ohio State, Knight briefly worked as a high school assistant before taking a similar position at Army, under Tates Locke. He replaced Locke as head coach in West Point in 1965.
Over six seasons, Knight won 102 games at Army, with four 18-win seasons and only one year under .500. Knight became the youngest coach at a Division I school in 1965 when he broke in at Army at 24.
But he made his mark at Indiana, including winning a school-record 661 games and reaching the NCAA tournament 24 times in 29 seasons. Knight’s first NCAA title came in 1976 when Indiana went undefeated, a feat no team has accomplished since.
