A renowned cartoonist, Bill Tidy, has been reported dead. Tidy relocated to Liverpool and was employed at the Pagan Smith advertising agency as a layout artist. After he became a professional in 1957, he began selling his cartoons to national newspapers and magazines, particularly Punch.
He married Rosa, a young Italian woman he met while traveling, in 1960. Early works by other cartoonists like Eric Burgin and Ronald Searle had an influence on Tidy’s style. He drew hands in the Disney style, just giving the thumb and the first three fingers to his characters.
From 1967 through 1981, The Cloggies, a Tidy cartoon that mocked northern and metropolitan British male society, particularly the vicious Lancashire clog-dancing scene, appeared in Private Eye.
The Fosdyke Saga, a spoof of Galsworthy’s epic tale of an aristocratic family, ran in the Daily Mirror from 1971 to 1985. Although Tidy passed away, his amazing cartoon masterpieces remained a legacy.
