At a May 2018 hearing in the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Posey mentioned that in the 1970s climate scientists believed the Earth was cooling.
At the hearing, Posey also expressed skepticism that humans contributed to climate change, asking whether climate change was occurring because carbon dioxide captured in permafrost was now leaking out.
Bill Posey also asked at the hearing whether warming would be beneficial for habitats and to people. Posey said, “I don’t think anybody disputes that the Earth is getting warmer; I think what’s not clear is the exact amount of who caused what, and getting to that is, I think, where we’re trying to go with this committee.”

Bill Posey for Congress
Indian River County has been represented by U.S. Rep. Bill Posey for nearly a decade, but for the first time, the Republican has a serious challenger in Democrat Sanjay Patel. Patel, a community activist, and former technology consultant is well-funded, gathering large crowds at events in the district’s most populated areas, and has the support of local, state, and national Democratic and progressive groups and some labor unions.
Bill Posey is a conservative and member of the Freedom Caucus, which pushes for limited government spending. Patel supported Bernie Sanders in 2016, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Patel hopes single-issue voters, focused on the environment and health care, in particular, will support him this fall.
Bill Posey said there’s a new energy around politics, and people especially young voters are tired of the establishment. “What we’re starting to see is a new generation of voices in our political system,” Patel said, “and they are more moderate and progressive because they’re looking for a platform to be more helpful.”
Still, he is a well-recognized name in the district after serving five terms in Congress and 16 years in the Florida House and Senate. He’s lived in the district since he was a child and has more than twice the amount of money in his campaign account.
Bill Posey has the support of conservative groups, local Realtor groups, and the state’s police union. Before being elected to the U.S. House in 2008, he served in the Florida House (1992-2000) and Senate (2000-08). Before that, in Rockledge, he was on the City Council for 10 years (elected 1976) and Planning Commission for two years (appointed 1974).
Bill Posey said he isn’t as far right as Patel makes him out to be, describing himself as fiscally conservative but sharing his constituents’ common values, such as government accountability and a love for the space program. “I’m willing to talk about anything anybody wants to talk about and there’s not a subject I’m afraid of,” Posey said.
“I’ve worked hard to represent the people, and that doesn’t mean you have to share all of their views.” He came under heavy fire in September, however. At a Trump Club meeting in Brevard County, he said he can pick out the house with the Patel campaign sign without even looking for the sign because “it’s the dumpiest damn house in the neighborhood.”
He said Congress needs to support businesses and corporations by supporting business-friendly policies and making sure there are enough qualified workers. Businesses are “the linchpin” for civil society; when the economy tanks, the entire community tanks.
“As much as we want to talk about the ‘evil’ corporations of this country, they’re providing jobs for our workforce,” Posey said. The economy is working only for the district’s richest residents. Many middle-class and low-income workers are juggling multiple jobs to keep up with the cost of living. Wages need to increase. “Folks are working tremendously hard. They’re just not making enough to keep up with the cost of living today,” Patel said.
