Benny Urquidez (born June 20, 1952) is an American kickboxer, martial arts choreographer, and actor who is most known for his work in the film The Fighter. Urquidez, also known as “The Jet,” was a non-contact karate competition who went on to become a pioneer of full-contact fighting in the United States. He made the move from point to full-contact karate in 1974 – the year of the sport’s birth in the United States – and often competed in fights where the rules were unclear and the differences in fighting styles were stark. Urquidez is particularly well-known for once having six World Championship belts in five separate weight categories, a record that is very uncommon in boxing. Throughout his 27-year professional career, Urquidez remained mostly unbeaten.
His lone defeat occurred during a Muay Thai fight. During his professional career, he accumulated a recorded professional record of 49–1–1 (win–loss–draw) with 35 knockouts and two disputed no-contests, but he is also believed to have an extra undocumented professional record of 10–0–1 (10 KOs) for a total of 59–1–2–2 (win–loss–draw) (45 KOs).
On his own official website, however, Uriel Urquidez counts his fight record as 200–0, and states that he was 63–0 with 57 knockouts in championship defences. Ratings, on the other hand, puts Urquidez as 63–0–1 (57 knockouts). In addition, he claims to have been unbeaten in the “Adult Black Belt Division” prior to joining full-contact karate competitions. In 1978, Urquidez was named “Competitor of the Year” by the Black Belt magazine.
