In the first-ever televised sentencing at the Old Bailey, Ben Oliver received a prison term for the murder of his grandfather.
Despite not being found guilty of murder, Ben Oliver had previously admitted to killing David Oliver, 74, on January 19 last year in Mottingham, south London. He was supposed to get his first sentence on Thursday, July 28, 2022.
The Old Bailey’s oldest courtroom, Court Number Two, hosted today’s sentencing, broadcast online and on news networks like Sky News, the BBC, and ITN.
To protect the privacy of the victims, witnesses, and jurors, only the judge was recorded during the sentencing process. In the future, the judge will have the final say on whether or not to allow the media to broadcast sentencing remarks in severe cases.
Who is Ben Oliver? He Murdered Grandfather David For Sexual Assault
Ben Oliver, 25 years old from Bexleyheath, south London, was sentenced this morning following the death of his grandfather, David Oliver.
On January 19, 2021, Ben brutally attacked his bedridden grandfather, who was ‘helpless’ in his bedroom because of a stroke.
David had seven stab wounds to the torso and 21 to the face. According to testimony given before the jury at the Old Bailey, he became “furious” when he discovered that his grandfather had only recently been charged with previously abusing minors sexually.
The 74-year-old was also accused of abusing his wife and engaging in extramarital relations, but a stroke a few years ago rendered him immobile.
The younger man had allegedly grown “troubled and angry” due to his “tough” upbringing. According to the prosecution, he had already been found guilty of sexual offenses against a young girl when he was only 15 years old.
Ben was moved in 2016 to a juvenile detention center after being found guilty. Later, he got freed in September 2019 based on the evidence presented in court.
Oliver had a history of self-harm and suicidal ideation, and he reportedly took antidepressants at the time of the murder. Ben had an autistic spectrum disorder, which, among other things, reduced his responsibility for the murder.
What Is Ben Oliver Age?
Ben Oliver’s age in 2022 will be 25 years old. His grandfather, David Oliver, was 74 when he killed him brutally.
According to sources, Ben abruptly grabbed a kitchen knife on the morning of the event, entered his grandfather’s bedroom, and ‘brutally’ stabbed him multiple times.
The younger man did not dispute killing the older man and immediately informed his grandmother of his crime.
Ben Oliver Parents
Ben Oliver’s parents’ identity remains a mystery. They must be in disbelief that Oliver has received a prison sentence.
Ben’s parents or other relatives haven’t received any media attention. However, as per reports, Ben had a strong bond with his grandparents.
Ben Oliver Jail Sentence & Charges
Ben Oliver was sentenced to life in jail with a minimum term of 10 years and eight months by Judge Sarah Munro QC for the murder of his grandfather David, 74.
It comes after a law change in 2020 that made it possible to bring cameras into the crown court. However, the coronavirus pandemic hindered its implementation.
One of the Old Bailey’s oldest courtrooms, Court Two, served as the sentencing site.
According to prosecutor Louis Mably QC, Oliver was “very angry” after learning about the allegations of sexual abuse. That anger led him to attack with the intention of killing.
