Basil Malan (October 1911 – 20 June 1967) was a South African cricket umpire. He stood in six Test matches between 1950 and 1957.

He remarried and had two more children before his second wife, Melissa, filed for divorce in 2009. In the summer of 2010, Schimmel was involved in a car accident in Scottsdale when his teenage daughter was behind the wheel. He died from his injuries on September 3, 2010, and is buried in Scottsdale. At one point in his career, Schimmel was considered among the 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all-time by Comedy Central.
