Ava Mae Collard Parents: Rebecca Grocott And Joshua Collard Jailed For Killing A Baby
For causing the death of their five-month-old daughter at their Stafford, England, home, a mother and father have been sentenced to prison.
On February 27, 2020, Rebecca Grocott, 27, and Joshua Collard, 30, alerted authorities that Ava Mae Collard was having a cardiac arrest.
Ava Mae was brought to the hospital, where she passed away on March 1, 2020, after paramedics and police arrived at the family’s Stone home.
Both Grocott and Collard, referred to as a “violent, ill-tempered misogynist,” could not explain what had taken place, and on March 25, they were both taken into custody after preliminary inquiries.
She had 28 rib fractures, was extremely underweight, and had bruises all over her body, including her head, face, legs, and arms.
The court heard that Collard grew his cannabis and returned to the family home to remove the plants and related equipment while his daughter was receiving critical treatment in the hospital.
Toxicology findings also revealed that Ava Mae had been exposed to cannabis.
Collard, of Stafford, and Grocott, of Stone, were found guilty of causing the girl’s death following a five-week trial at Stafford Crown Court.
The father was given an 11-year prison term on Thursday, while Grocott was given an eight-year sentence.
Ava Mae Collard Parents, Rebecca And Joshua, Arrest Charges
Joshua Collard, 30, and Rebecca Grocott, 27, Ava’s parents, initially claimed they had no idea how she had sustained the wounds, but they later denied ever having hurt her. But after a five-week trial, they were determined to be guilty.
Judge Mr. Justice Cotter KC stated that he had seen “no evidence of any remorse” from Collard for what had transpired but accepted that Grocott was regretful when they were found guilty and sentenced to prison for killing their infant.
Ava Mae would have experienced “pain and misery throughout her brief life,” he continued.
Other offenses included abusing, mistreating, neglecting, or abandoning a child or a young person to inflict needless pain or harm, as well as two counts of allowing significant physical harm to a child.
The judge sentenced the couple, stating that although they were the only ones who knew what happened to their daughter, her injuries were consistent with having had her ribs “squeezed.”
The Crown Prosecution Service’s Peter Grice stated following the sentencing that Ava Mae “did not die a natural death and suffered such heinous injuries over time, including repeated exposure to cannabis.”
