Lee County leaders introduce new tax increase for curbside recycling pickup
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Seventy-seven percent of Lee County residents recycle, but starting later this year, residents will have to pay extra if they want their blue bin picked up curbside. Lee County leaders recently introduced the new tax increase.
“I understand why the county did this because it’s costing them more to process the recycled material. Anything that comes in dirty whether it’s plastic, glass, metal, it still has to be cleaned and decontaminated to get it ready for recycling,” Cape Coral Councilwoman Jennifer Nelson said.
The county-wide increase will cost taxpayers about $7.50 annually and goes into effect October 1.
“I do want residents to understand recycling is still the answer and it’ll always be the answer,” Nelson said.
The county-wide increase will cost taxpayers about $7.50 annually and goes into effect October 1.
“I do want residents to understand recycling is still the answer and it’ll always be the answer,” Nelson said.
She said the reason the county is implementing this tax increase is that the price per pound of recyclable material, like plastic, has decreased. However, the cost to sort, clean, and decontaminate the material has stayed the same.
Residents have had mixed reactions to the tax increase.
“Take it somewhere else, talk to the suppliers, talk to the middle man. Do something else. Leave us alone, we’re taxed enough,” Cape Coral resident Jay Murphy saidl.
“Obviously nobody wants to pay more money. However the majority of my trash is recycled because I try to recycle everything I can,” Cape Coral resident Lisa Bemboom said.
Cape Coral residents concerned about brown algae in floating through canals
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Viewers in Cape Coral are sending in pictures of chunky brown algae floating through canals.
“I don’t know how to describe it except for it’s ugly,” Cape Coral resident Jim Limbright said.
The algae in the photo showed coated waterways, leading many to wonder, is this the same blue-green algae we saw in 2018?
“It’s just a nasty situation we don’t want any part of it really,” Limbright said.
Professor Barry Rosen at FGCU said the reason we’re seeing these algae is that plant-like organisms on the bottom of the canal are going through a photosynthesis process.
During that process, O2 gas bubbles form and get stuck in the slime-like substance. After so many of the bubbles form, the pieces of the algae float to the surface.
“It can be massive like the pictures you showed me. Big massive patches of brown showing up. It is not considered algae bloom — it is not a planktonic organism that can keep growing and growing in the water,” Rosen said.
Rosen said these algae will likely stick around until heavy rain pushes it out.
