Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player who rose to the top of the world rankings. Having won three Grand Slam championships, he is considered one of the greatest tennis players to have come out of the United States. Ashe, an African-American, was the first black player to be chosen to the United States Davis Cup squad and the first black man to win the singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He is also the only African-American to have won the Davis Cup singles championship. He left the company in 1980. In 1968, he was rated World No. 1 by Harry Hopman, and in 1975,
he was ranked World No. 1 by Lance Tingay of The Daily Telegraph and World Tennis Magazine. In the ATP computer rankings, he reached his highest position of No. 2 in May 1976. Ashe is thought to have acquired HIV in the early 1980s as a result of a blood transfusion he got after heart bypass surgery. He made his condition public in April 1992 and immediately started trying to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS among other people. The Arthur Ashe Foundation for AIDS Research and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health were both established prior to his death on February 6, 1993, from AIDS-related pneumonia. He was 42 years old. On June 20, 1993, former United States President Bill Clinton presented Ashe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he had previously received.
