Are pampers harmful

NEW DELHI: A study released by a Delhi-based advocacy organisation raises concern about the presence of toxic phthalates in disposable baby diapers available in the Indian market. Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals known to cause serious health impacts.

Disposable diapers frequently contain chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These include chemicals such as ethylbenzene, toluene, xylene and dipentene. According to the EPA, VOCs can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, damage to the liver, kidney and central nervous system.

Can You Keep The Baby In Diapers for 24 Hours? It is not safe to have the baby in diapers for 24 hours but recommendations say that you need to have open air time for six to eight hours every day. Whenever you are changing diapers, give 15-20 minutes of open air time to let the skin dry on its own.

“Ideally there should be no phthalates present in the diapers. … However, no specific guidelines are applicable on diapers in India,” explained Dubey. DEHP, BBP, DIBP and DBP, which are commonly used in the manufacturing of diapers, are highly hazardous especially for children, the study says.

For example, a study into the safety of disposable diapers found samples containing some 60 dangerous chemicals. And coupled with the fact a baby will use between 6,500 and 10,000 diapers before they’re potty trained! This means some babies are being exposed to excessive levels of chemicals from their diapers.

Diapers are made of breathable material which are specially designed for newborns and it’s totally safe. Diapers used with proper precautions will never harm at all.

So after how many hours should the diaper be changed? It depends, although a safe duration could be every two to three hours. Disposable diapers have a far better absorption limit as compared to cloth diapers, and could save you a lot of time and trouble providing valuable comfort to your baby.
