Antonio Giovinazzi Career

Karting
He raced in karting from 2006 to 2012 and became the champion in the Italian National Trophy 60cc and Euro Trophy 60, both in 2006.

Formula Pilota China
He began his single-seater career by competing in Formula Pilota China in 2012. He finished as the overall champion in his debut season with a total of six wins. He also raced for the BVM team in the last round of the 2012 Formula Abarth season at Monza. Despite winning two races and finishing in second place in one, he did not receive any points since he was a guest driver.

FIA Formula 3 European Championship

In 2013, he participated in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with the Double R Racing team. He scored his first points at Brands Hatch after finishing 11th and 9th in two out of three races. In 2014, he signed with Carlin to compete in the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season.

British Formula 3 Championship

He also competed in the 2013 British Formula 3 season alongside Sean Gelael. He claimed his maiden win in F3 at Silverstone.

Masters of Formula

He made his debut in the 2013 Masters of Formula 3 on 7 July 2013, finishing in the 10th position.

GP2 Series

He joined the series with Prema Powerteam for the 2016 season alongside Red Bull Junior and 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 Series runner-up Pierre Gasly.

After a poor start by finishing outside the points and losing reverse grid pole in the first two rounds, Giovinazzi scored victories in both the feature and sprint races in Baku, becoming the first driver to do ‘the double’ since Davide Valsecchi in 2012.

Giovinazzi took pole position from his teammate Gasly at Spa and won the Sprint Race after Gasly had won the feature race on Saturday. At Monza, he took pole position but was disqualified from the session due to a technical infringement. Despite starting from the back of the grid, he won in the Feature Race after a mix up involving the safety car that worked in his favor.

He took the lead of the championship at Sepang by overtaking Sergey Sirotkin late on for his 5th win of the season. However, Pierre Gasly’s victory in the Abu Dhabi feature race meant that Gasly led by 12 points into the final race. He finished the final race ahead of Gasly as Alex Lynn won the race, however, after making a poor start, he was unable to overturn the 12-point gap, and Gasly won the championship by 8 points.

Had Giovinazzi won the championship, he would have been the first rookie champion since Nico Hülkenberg in 2009.  He would also have been the last ever GP2 champion as the series would become FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2017.

In September 2016, it was announced that Giovinazzi would perform simulator work for Scuderia Ferrari. In December, he was confirmed as Ferrari’s third driver. He participated in pre-season testing for the 2017 season with Sauber. During the Australian Grand Prix, he substituted for Pascal Wehrlein, who did not feel fit enough for a complete race distance due to his training deficit as a result of a crash at the 2017 Race of Champions. He finished 12th on his debut. His debut meant he was the first Italian driver to start a Formula One race since Jarno Trulli and Vitantonio Liuzzi at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix. Sauber announced Wehrlein would again be replaced by Giovinazzi for the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix, where he crashed out during both qualifying and the race. He also participated in a number of free practice sessions over the course of the 2017and 2018 seasons. He will partner Kimi Räikkönen at Sauber for the 2019 season.

Antonio Giovinazzi Car Number

Since the start of the 2014 Formula One season, drivers have to choose an available starting number before entering their first Grand Prix. Drivers carry this number throughout their Formula One career.

A permanent number can only be reallocated if the driver associated with that number has not participated in a race for two entire consecutive seasons; for example, numbers that were used most recently in the 2016 season can be reallocated at the beginning of 2019, providing that the driver who used the number in 2016 does not return to Formula One in 2017 or 2018. For instance, Jenson Button’s number 22 would have been available for re-allocation in 2019 after his departure from full-time racing in 2016, but an appearance in the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix replacing Fernando Alonso, who was participating in the 2017 Indianapolis 500 on that weekend instead, means his number may now not be reassigned until 2020 at the earliest.

The FIA has also issued temporary numbers to drivers that are exceptions to this rule, for example, if a driver withdraws from a race and a reserve driver takes their place then they receive a team-allocated number, this is also the case of free-practice-only drivers. Some examples of those numbers are 36 (used by Antonio Giovinazzi in two races), 40 (used by Paul di Resta in one race), 45 (used by André Lotterer in one race), 46 (used by Will Stevens in one race) and 47 (used by Stoffel Vandoorne in one race).

The reigning Formula One World Drivers’ Champion can elect to use their allocated permanent number or car number 1 during the year following their title. The number 1 was most recently used by Sebastian Vettel in 2014.

The number 17 was used by Jules Bianchi in 2014 before his crash at the Japanese Grand Prix. Following his death, the number was retired as a mark of respect.

 March 18, 2019

New signing with Alfa Romeo Racing Antonio Giovinazzi has called his first outing in Formula 1 a “tough race” after coming home in 15th place.

Suffering a collision on the opening lap, the 25-year-old said he did the best he could in the situation.

“It was a tough race.  I picked up some damage to my car on lap one and after that, it was challenging to stay up to speed,” said Giovinazzi.

He added: “There were some battles and I did my best to defend my position.”

The Italian recognizes that it is still early in the season and that there is room for improvement, and so is focused on the next race on the calendar: Bahrain.

“It was only the first race of the season, so I look forward to fighting for a stronger result in Bahrain.”
