Anthony Quinn, whose full name is Anthony Rudolph Oaxaca Quinn, was a Mexican-born American actor who appeared in more than 150 movies but was best known for playing the earthy, full-of-life title character in Zorba the Greek (1964). He inhabited that role so completely and at easely that many of his later roles appeared to be infused with that character’s spirit as well. His 13th kid was born when he was in his 80s, demonstrating that he embraced his off-screen life with the same zeal.

In 1952 for Viva Zapata! and in 1956 for Lust for Life, Quinn received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on two separate occasions. He also garnered five Golden Globe nominations, two BAFTA Award nominations, and two Academy Award nominations in the field of Best Leading Actor. He received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award from the Golden Globes in 1987. He continues to be a key player in the image of Latin America in American media through both his artistic achievements and civil rights advocacy.
