That’s equal to the modern equivalent of $170 million after adjusting for inflation. Thomas Edison was was born on February 11, 1847. He died on October 18, 1931. He was the seventh and last child to Nancy Matthews Elliot and Samuel Ogden Edison. The family lived in Milan, Ohio until 1867 when they moved to Port Huron, Michigan due to economical decline. During his laborious life, Edison invented many devices that have had an immeasurable impact on modern life. He was known and popularized as”The Wizard of Menlo Park.” Early in his life, Edison was diagnosed with scarlet fever and chronic middle-ear infections, which had gone untreated. These illnesses would eventually cause lifelong hearing problems. During his childhood, Edison often sold newspaper and candy on trains operating between Port Huron and Detroit. He also sold vegetables as another source of income. Edison eventually came into the exclusive rights to sell newspaper on the street. His adult business career began  when he founded a small local newspaper called Grand Trunk Herald, which he printed with his four young associates. It was during this time that Edison discovered his talents as an entrepreneur. Later, he became a telegraph operator before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, working for the Associate Press bureau news wire, an extension of Western Union. Edison was granted the night shift, which afforded him much time to while away reading and experimenting. He would eventually move to New Jersey and this is where his earlier inventions were recognized, including the stock ticker and electric vote recorder. They were both granted patents. However, his major reputation came when he invented the phonograph in Newark, New Jersey, in 1877. His other major inventions include electric light, sound recording and motion picture.
