Annette Gordon-Reed husband Robert Reed is a NY Supreme Court Justice since 2017. Annette and Robert have been married for 39 years.
American historian and law professor Annette Gordon-Reed came to the spotlight following the publication of her 1997 book, Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy.
In her first book, Annette investigated third US President Thomas Jefferson’s alleged relationship with a mixed-race slave woman named Sally Hemings. However, she was not the first person to write about the supposed relationship between the two. Rumors also indicated that Jefferson was the father of Sally’s children.
On the other hand, prominent historians dismissed the allegations and came up with the theory that Jefferson’s nephew Peter Carr was indeed the father.
In her investigation, Reed examined the assumptions followed by historians at the time. She discovered that statements made by white people were deemed the truth, while black people were considered to be liars. She found out that evidence and statements presented by African-American people in support of Jefferson’s paternity were mostly dismissed.
In addition to her findings, an extensive DNA test was done on the remains of Jefferson’s descendants. The results of the DNA tests proved Reed’s theory that the former US President actually fathered multiple children with Sally.
Annette Gordon Juneteenth is another highly-acclaimed book by the historian. Officially titled On Juneteenth, the book revisits the national holiday on June 19. also called the Juneteenth National Independence Day. The holiday celebrates the emancipation of African-American slaves in 1865.
Reed uses the book as a medium to revisit the holiday from the point of view of a Texas resident. She also explores how the holiday influenced her and the life of her family members.
