Born John Andrew Henry Forrest in Perth, Australia in 1961, he is also known by the names Andrew and Twiggy. He attended the University of Western Australia with a double major in economics and politics. He worked as a stockbroker at the brokerage houses Kirke Securities and Jacksons after graduation. He was the founding CEO of Anaconda Nickel, now Minara Resources, during his early 30’s. Since then, it has become one of Australia’s single largest mineral exporters with its Murrin Murrin Joint Venture nickel project where he was the chairman.

He resumed the role as the non-executive chairman in August 2011. He is also the non-executive chairman of Poseidon Nickel Limited.
