Amalia Uys Family | Amalia Uys Sister

Her sister, Hermien, passed away in September last year, at 36, after a long battle with schizophrenia. Hermien stayed at Huis Yana, a self-catering schizophrenic home. “She chose to be there because she can be around people who understand what she is going through.

Schizophrenia cannot be cured and life expectancy is short because the medication is so punishing. She is thought to have died from organ failure or a heart attack. ”

The second insight she wants to share is that you have to love the people in your life and make peace where it may be needed. “As a young child, I just didn’t understand Hermien. She was six years older than me, this strange, rebellious person I couldn’t identify with. Suddenly, as a 13-year-old, I had to empathize with her diagnosis, but there was no relationship, to begin with.

“At university, I realized I had a responsibility to start making peace with her and her illness because she didn’t choose it. Her life was basically stolen from her, ”she says, her voice breaking.

“When I came to live in Johannesburg, I put more effort into visiting her. This year [last year], the second last time I saw her, I looked at her and thought ‘I love you and I enjoy you’. Even though things were hard between us, I still felt I had a sister.

After her Death

Two weeks later she died. That I didn’t have more time after that. She shook her head and fell silent. “ If you need to make peace with someone close to you, do it. You don’t want to think later that you could have made more effort, that you were trapped in work, every day, or even your own dreams. “

And she learned this from her sister. “She was anchored in simple things because she did not have a simple life. She wrote many poems, her faith was strong, and she always made every effort to call us. She was an incredible person and a fighter, she always kept hope.

“I had a moment now: I always thought Hermien was one of the strongest people I know. I’m having a pretty tough year, and I can see the beauty of it too. I could see I was kind to Mien because I’m okay and I’m happy, despite and even because of the difficult times. ”
