Alexander Elliot Anderson Salmond (/?sm?nd/; born 31 December 1954) is a Scottish politician who is now serving as the country’s First Minister. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland. In May 2007, he was appointed as Scotland’s fourth First Minister. He serves as the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and as the MSP for Aberdeenshire East in the Scottish Parliament. During his tenure as a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom’s House of Commons, he represented the constituency of Banff and Buchan. Salmond previously served as the head of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from September 1990 until his resignation in September 2000. His election as MSP for Banff and Buchan came after the formation of the devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999, allowing him to serve the region as both a Member of Parliament (MP) and a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). Salmond stepped down as leader of the Scottish National Party in 2000 and did not run for re-election to the Scottish Parliament. He did, however, win re-election to his Westminster seat in the subsequent general election in 2001.
Salmond was re-elected as SNP leader in 2004 and re-elected to his Banff and Buchan constituency in the 2005 general election the following year, which he won. In 2006, he declared his intention to run for the Gordon seat in the 2007 Scottish Parliament election, which Salmond won by a landslide against the incumbent MSP and in which the SNP emerged as the single biggest political party in Scotland. Salmond was elected First Minister of Scotland by the Scottish Parliament on May 16 of that year. Salmond served as First Minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2011, when he led a minority government. However, after the 2011 Scottish Parliament election, the Scottish National Party, which he leads, won an outright majority. Salmond is one of the most vocal proponents of Scottish independence on the political stage, and he has called for a referendum on the subject on many occasions. Salmond has fought against global warming, and while in office, he committed Scotland to laws aimed at reducing emissions and increasing the production of renewable energy.
