Research has found that the genetic condition is caused by a gene mutation known as LMNA. The condition is extremely rare and its symptoms manifest at an early age. People suffering from the disease often present with signs during infancy such as failure to thrive, localized scleroderma-like skin disease, rigid and short limbs, and hair loss. Progeria was first described independently by Jonathan Hutchinson in 1886 and later by Hastings Gilford in 1897.
Research is ongoing to treat the disease, however, it can be done with several medications as well as growth hormone treatments. It is also noted that people suffering from this disease are not older than 20 years. 90% of them die from a heart attack or stroke.
