Abrewa Nana

Abrewa Nana, born Dorcas Opoku Marfo is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, dancer and former Idol series judge. Twenty-seven year-old Abrewa N ana a household name in Ghana is the first female artist in the Ghanaian music industry to have her own album in the contemporary HIP-LIFE category. 

A trained accountant who followed her musical aspirations, Abrewa Nana is a skilled dancer and singer with three albums to her credit.

Her parents are Isaac Dakwa and Juliana Blankson. The name “Abrewa” literally means “old woman” in the Akan language, her mother tongue. She adopted this as her stage name partly because she had been named after her grandmother.

Raised mostly by her single mother, Nana attended primary school in Accra and Aggrey Memorial Senior High School, before studying Business Accounting at the Takoradi Polytechnic. As a teenager, she idolized Mariah Carey and Aaliyah but was introduced to hiplife – a combination of hip hop and African highlife – as a student in polytechnic and began to compose her own lyrics.

In 2000, she released her debut album, Sogoa, and almost immediately became a national figure. The album was nominated in three categories at the Ghana Music Awards. Abrewa won the award’s trophy for Hiplife Song of the Year in 2001; in 2002 she won best vocalist at the same award show.

She gained international recognition at the Ghana Music Awards UK 2003 when she was awarded the Best Female Artiste of the Year and also staged some performances at UK, USA, Togo and Benin. She really enjoyed her performance at the Terry Bonchaka Nite and also with Tony Tetuila.
