Initially committed to the University of Connecticut, Hernandez decided to attend the University of Florida, where he played collegiately. During his sophomore year, he was a recipient of the John Mackey Award. Meanwhile, during his junior year, he was recognized by The Sporting News, the College Football News, and the Associated Press as first-team All-American. Eventually, he decided to forgo his senior year at the university, and declare himself eligible for NFL drafting.
